Bringing Asia to Calgary: The Story Behind IBU
In the heart of South Calgary, a unique dining experience awaits as father-son duo Jeff and Joel Matthews unveil the IBU Restaurant and Bar. With a name that means “mother” in Indonesian, IBU embodies warmth, community, and shared memories, aiming to offer an inviting culinary journey influenced by Jeff and Joel’s extensive experiences across Asia.
The restaurant marks the culmination of 30 years of culinary adventures that took Jeff from a cooking career in Calgary to renowned kitchens in Jordan, Indonesia, and Australia. This journey allowed him to soak in diverse culinary traditions and flavors, which he now reinvents alongside his son Joel. Together, they are committed to creating dishes that not only reflect their travels but also resonate deeply with the Calgary community.
More Than Just a Restaurant: A Family Tradition
As they embark on this exciting venture, the Matthews family emphasizes the importance of a family-oriented environment. Located in a charming 75-year-old building on the corner of 14th Street and 29th Avenue S.W., IBU features three distinct seating areas and an open kitchen, drawing guests into the heart of the dining experience. Antique red doors imported from Shanghai adorn the entrance, hinting at the enchanting atmosphere that awaits within.
“At IBU, we want our guests to feel at home,” Joel Matthews shares. “Every dish is crafted not just with ingredients but also with stories and emotions.” The engaging ambiance and chef-driven menu create a space where diners can connect, not only with the food but also with one another.
Innovative Flavors Await: The IBU Menu
IBU offers a diverse culinary landscape, combining contemporary tastes with Asian inspiration. This commitment to quality is encapsulated in their Chef’s Table experience, which promises an intimate seven-course meal featuring locally sourced ingredients infused with global flavors. Executive Chef Joel aims to tantalize taste buds while sharing the narratives behind his dishes, ensuring that each meal is more than just food—it’s an experience.
In addition to the Chef’s Table, the restaurant's menu showcases creative small plates and main courses designed to appeal to both adventurous eaters and those seeking comfort food. According to family insights, the focus lies on vibrant yet approachable flavors, ensuring that the food remains exciting without overwhelming the palate.
A Community Engagement Initiative
IBU is also keen on engaging with the local community by offering catering services for events, including weddings that can host up to 120 guests. With plans for delivery services through popular platforms like Skip, Door Dash, and Uber Eats set to roll out next year, the restaurant aims to reach a broader audience while maintaining its commitment to quality and service.
As the Matthews family gears up for the official opening, their journey reflects not only a personal passion for food but also a larger narrative of community building through culinary appreciation. “We love sharing our heritage and experiences with Calgarians,” Jeff Matthews explains. “Food is a universal language, and we hope to connect people through our dishes.”
