The Sweet Spirit of Community
As the aroma of freshly baked cookies fills the air, it’s clear that the holiday season has officially arrived. Local chefs are coming together for the 2025 Magic of Christmas cookie sale, an event that not only tantalizes taste buds but also warms hearts through a spirit of giving. Leading the charge are renowned chefs Francine Gomes of Cluck N Cleaver, Liana Robberecht of Brew+Bloom, and Andrea Harling of The Sweatered Hen, who each whip up unique cookies that embody both creativity and nostalgia.
More Than Just Cookies: A Blend of Creativity and Tradition
Cookies, often considered the quintessential holiday treat, serve as a canvas for culinary expression. Whether it’s Robberecht’s espresso bourbon chocolate cookie or Gomes’s s’mores cookie, every creation reflects personal stories and cultural backgrounds. As Robberecht articulates, "You can turn anything into a cookie," highlighting the versatility of this beloved dessert.
A Unique Local Initiative
The Magic of Christmas cookie sale first took root in 2018, initiated by Robberecht, her colleague Jason McKay, and Global Calgary’s Leslie Horton. This initiative stands out not just for its focus on cookies but for its commitment to benefiting the community. All proceeds support The Magic of Christmas, a charity dedicated to providing gifts and food to families in need during the holiday season. It’s a collaborative effort that brings together chefs from renowned establishments like Salt and Brick, Charcut, and Rouge, demonstrating the powerful bonds within Calgary’s culinary community.
A Fun and Flavorful Experience
Each chef commits to baking at least 300 cookies, squares, or other treats, ensuring that there is plenty to go around on the day of the sale. For a modest fee, customers purchase cookie cards that allow them to collect a baker’s dozen, encouraging participation in a festive cookie swap. The lively setting at the ATCO Blue Flame Kitchen, filled with laughter and good cheer, provides a perfect backdrop for connecting with local chefs and indulging in delicious cookies.
